This original 1931 painting by Manitoba artist Lynn Sissons was commissioned as the frontispiece for The Thread of the Pioneers, a historical memoir chronicling early life at Fort La Reine in Portage la Prairie. Created from historical accounts and oral descriptions after original photographs were lost in a fire, the painting vividly reconstructs the fort and its surroundings as they appeared in the 1860s. A copy of the book is included with the sale.

Lynn Sissons

1898-1985

Born in 1898 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Lynn Sissons (1898-1985) began as a ceramics painter as a teenager. She enrolled in the Winnipeg School of Art in 1913 and studied amongst Canadian art giants like W.J. Phillips and L.L. Fitzgerald. Her first group show was held in Montreal in 1932 and her first solo exhibition was held in Winnipeg in 1943. By 1963, she was honoured with a solo exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. A year before her death, Sissons’ work was included in an exhibition commemorating the School of Art in Winnipeg, titled “The Winnipeg School of Art: The Early Years” in 1984.
